Why Opt for Ski Travel Insurance?

The excitement of a winter sports holiday comes with its risks. High overseas medical expenses from injuries, lost or damaged ski equipment, or unexpected trip cancellations can disrupt even the most well-planned ski trip.

Adding winter sports cover to your travel insurance policy ensures you have some financial protection against these unpredictable events. Having that protection lets you focus on enjoying the thrills of the snow.

Coverage Details of WAS Ski and Snowboarding Insurance

Our plans offer flexibility to meet various needs and budgets. If you’re heading somewhere for snow sports, basic coverage won’t cover these activities. You need the snow pack option to provide additional security:

  • Overseas Emergency medical costs - Coverage for unexpected overseas medical bills arising from winter sports injuries, including necessary treatment and potential emergency medical evacuation.
  • Equipment protection - If your own or rented ski equipment is lost, damaged, or delayed, we can cover the cost of hiring replacements if it falls under covered reasons. The maximum amount payable for each insured person is $300.
  • Ski run closure - Compensation if you cannot ski for more than 24 continuous hours due to unforeseen insufficient snow or lift closures at your booked ski resort. We’ll pay a daily benefit for each insured person of $100 up to a maximum amount payable of $500.
  • Pre-paid costs - Reimbursement for non-refundable, pre-paid ski lift passes, snow sport equipment hire, or tuition fees you can’t use due to covered injuries or illnesses. The maximum amount payable for each insured person is $300.

Be sure to review the terms of your policy for full details on these benefits.

Note: Not all benefits apply and will depend on whether you have selected them (and they are reflected on your Certificate of Insurance). Terms, conditions, exclusions, sub-limits, and limits apply. Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) for further details.

What Isn’t Covered for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday?

While our snow pack offers extensive coverage for many winter sports activities, there are specific exclusions to be aware of. You're not covered for incidents that occur while engaged in the following activities:

  • off-piste skiing, unless with a qualified instructor or guide;
  • freestyle skiing;
  • ski jumping;
  • snow sport acrobatics or stunts;
  • extreme skiing/snowboarding; or
  • skeleton and luge or any variations.

Please note that these are specific exclusions under the snow pack, and other general exclusions outlined in our policy document also apply.

Frequently asked questions

Ski and Snowboarding Insurance FAQs

Browse answers to the most common questions we get asked about ski and snowboarding insurance

How do I ensure my ski travel insurance covers all my activities?

When purchasing your policy, opt for the optional snow sports cover to ensure activities like backcountry skiing and snowboarding (when with a qualified instructor or guide) are included. Please note that there are certain activities that are not covered, so please check the PDS for further details.

What should I do if my ski equipment is stolen during my trip?

Immediately report the theft to local authorities and contact our support team to initiate a claim for the cost of hiring replacement equipment.

Are there any exclusions I should be aware of with ski travel insurance?

Common exclusions include travelling against the advice of a medical professional, participating in professional sports, or incidents occurring under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Check our specialised and generalised exclusions laid out in the PDS.

Does the insurance cover both domestic and international ski trips?

Yes, our policies provide coverage for both domestic travel insurance needs and international ski trips, including popular destinations like Canada and Japan. Please note that emergency medical expenses are not covered under domestic policies as these are generally covered under the Australian government’s Medicare regime (publicly funded universal health care insurance scheme).

What happens if I need emergency medical evacuation on the slopes?

Our ski travel insurance includes emergency medical evacuation if necessary. This ensures that if you're injured on the slopes, you can be transported to the nearest appropriate hospital for treatment.

Remember, reading the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is crucial to understand all the terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits of your policy.
